Kilobyte
A kilobyte is a unit of digital information equal to 1,024 bytes in binary (or 1,000 bytes in decimal notation). It is used to measure small file sizes such as text documents, configuration files, and simple images.
History
The prefix 'kilo' in computing refers to 1,024 (2¹⁰) rather than 1,000 due to the binary nature of computers. To resolve this ambiguity, the IEC introduced 'kibibyte' (KiB) for 1,024 bytes in 1998, though 'kilobyte' remains more commonly used.
