Knot
A knot is a unit of speed equal to one nautical mile per hour (approximately 1.151 mph or 1.852 km/h). It is the standard unit of speed in maritime and air navigation worldwide.
History
The term 'knot' comes from the practice of measuring a ship's speed by throwing a log overboard attached to a rope with knots tied at regular intervals. Sailors would count how many knots passed through their hands in a set time. One knot equals one nautical mile per hour.
