Centimeters of Water
Centimeters of water is a unit of pressure defined as the pressure exerted by a column of water one centimeter high. It is primarily used in medicine for measuring airway pressure in ventilators and central venous pressure.
History
Centimeters of water became a standard unit in respiratory medicine because it represents pressures at a scale relevant to the human respiratory system. Normal airway pressures during mechanical ventilation typically range from 5-30 cmH₂O.
