The bar is a metric unit of pressure equal to 100,000 pascals. It is approximately equal to atmospheric pressure at sea level. The bar and millibar are commonly used in meteorology, diving, and industrial applications.
History
The bar was introduced by Norwegian meteorologist Vilhelm Bjerknes in 1909. The name comes from the Greek word 'baros,' meaning weight. While not an SI unit, the bar is accepted for use with the SI system and remains widely used, particularly in European countries.
