Metric Horsepower
Metric horsepower (Pferdestärke in German, abbreviated PS) is a unit of power equal to approximately 735.5 watts. It is slightly less than mechanical horsepower (745.7 watts) and is used in automotive specifications in many European and Asian countries.
History
Metric horsepower was defined as 75 kilogram-force meters per second. The abbreviation 'PS' comes from the German 'Pferdestärke' (horse strength). It is widely used in Germany, Japan, and other countries for rating engine power. One PS equals approximately 0.9863 mechanical horsepower.
