Yard
A yard is a unit of length in the imperial and US customary systems equal to 3 feet or 36 inches (0.9144 meters). It is commonly used for measuring fabric, field dimensions in American football, and short distances.
History
The yard is believed to have originated in England, possibly based on the length of a man's belt or the distance from King Henry I's nose to his outstretched thumb. The international yard was defined in 1959 as exactly 0.9144 meters.
