Meter
The meter is the base unit of length in the International System of Units (SI). It is used worldwide for measuring distance, height, and dimensions. One meter is equal to 100 centimeters, 1,000 millimeters, or approximately 3.281 feet.
History
The meter was originally defined in 1793 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole. In 1983, it was redefined as the distance light travels in vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second, making it one of the most precisely defined units in science.
