Ounce
An ounce is a unit of mass in the imperial and US customary systems equal to 1/16 of a pound or approximately 28.35 grams. It is commonly used for measuring food portions, beverages, and small consumer products.
History
The word 'ounce' comes from the Latin 'uncia,' meaning one-twelfth. The avoirdupois ounce, the most common type, was historically defined as 1/16 of a pound. It should not be confused with the troy ounce (31.1 g), which is used for precious metals.
