Metric Ton
A metric ton (also called tonne) is a unit of mass equal to 1,000 kilograms or approximately 2,204.6 pounds. It is the standard unit for measuring large quantities in international trade, shipping, and industry.
History
The metric ton was introduced with the metric system and is derived from the French word 'tonne.' Unlike the US short ton (2,000 lb) and the imperial long ton (2,240 lb), the metric ton is based on the decimal system. It was officially adopted in France in 1795.
