Tablespoon
A tablespoon is a unit of volume equal to 3 teaspoons, 1/2 US fluid ounce, or approximately 14.79 milliliters. It is a standard measuring unit in cooking and baking, and is also used for dosing liquid medications.
History
The tablespoon originated as the large spoon used for serving food at the table, as opposed to the smaller teaspoon. It was standardized as a cooking measurement in the 18th and 19th centuries. In Australia, a tablespoon equals 20 mL rather than the US/UK standard of approximately 15 mL.
