History

The tablespoon originated as the large spoon used for serving food at the table, as opposed to the smaller teaspoon. It was standardized as a cooking measurement in the 18th and 19th centuries. In Australia, a tablespoon equals 20 mL rather than the US/UK standard of approximately 15 mL.

History

The imperial gallon was defined by the British Weights and Measures Act of 1824 as the volume of 10 pounds of water at 62°F. It replaced several older gallon measures. While the UK has largely metricated, the imperial gallon is still used for fuel economy ratings in some countries.
