Liter
A liter is a metric unit of volume equal to 1,000 milliliters or one cubic decimeter. It is the standard unit for measuring liquid volumes worldwide, from beverages to fuel. One liter equals approximately 0.264 US gallons.
History
The liter was introduced in France in 1795 as a derived metric unit. The original French spelling was 'litre.' It was originally defined as the volume of one kilogram of pure water at 4°C and standard atmospheric pressure. In 1964, the definition was simplified to exactly one cubic decimeter.
