Feet per Second
Feet per second is an imperial unit of speed measuring the distance in feet traveled per second. It is commonly used in ballistics for bullet velocities, in engineering, and in sports for measuring sprint speeds.
History
Feet per second has been used in English-speaking countries for centuries. It is particularly important in ballistics, where muzzle velocities of firearms are typically expressed in fps. For reference, the speed of sound at sea level is approximately 1,125 ft/s.
