Millimeters of Mercury
Millimeters of mercury (also called Torr) is a unit of pressure based on the height of a mercury column. It is the standard unit for measuring blood pressure (e.g., 120/80 mmHg) and is also used in vacuum technology.
History
The mmHg unit originates from Torricelli's barometer invention in 1643. Standard atmospheric pressure supports a mercury column of exactly 760 mm. The unit is named 'Torr' in honor of Torricelli. It remains the universal standard for blood pressure measurement.
