Mile
A mile is a unit of length in the imperial and US customary systems equal to 5,280 feet, 1,760 yards, or approximately 1.609 kilometers. It is the primary unit for measuring road distances in the United States and United Kingdom.
History
The mile originated from the Roman 'mille passus' (thousand paces), which was approximately 4,860 feet. The statute mile of 5,280 feet was established by English Parliament in 1593 during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I to reconcile the Roman mile with the English furlong system.
