Gigabit
A gigabit is a unit of digital information equal to 1,024 megabits or approximately 1 billion bits. It is used to measure high-speed network connections, with gigabit Ethernet and fiber internet becoming increasingly common.
History
Gigabit networking became mainstream with the adoption of Gigabit Ethernet (1 Gbps) in the 2000s. Today, many ISPs offer gigabit fiber internet to homes. Data centers and backbone networks operate at 10, 40, or even 100 Gbps.
